FIFA Women’s World Cup to be broadcast in 8K Ultra HD

Positive FIFA news alert: NHK has agreed to broadcast matches from the 2015 Women’s World Cup in 8K Ultra HD. 

NHK and FIFA have cooked up a plan which will see matches from the 2015 Women’s World Cup publically broadcast in 8K. 

While beleaguered president Sepp Blatter might have other things on his mind right now, football’s governing body found the time to strike a deal with Japanese public broadcaster NHK will will see matches from the upcoming Women’s World Cup broadcast in 8K at a number of public locations in Japan, the US and Canada. 

What are Super Hi-Vision, Ultra HD, 4K and 8K TV?The tournament, which is being held this summer in Canada, will see various games broadcast using NHK’s “Super Hi-Vision” technology, which boasts a resolution of 7,680 by 4,320 pixels and 22 channel 3D sound. 

The viewings will be held at two locations in Japan, two in the US and just one in the host nation. 

If you’re in the land of the rising sun this June, you’ll find the viewings at the Aeon Cinema, Kohoku New Town and SKIP City, Sai-no-Kuni Visual Plaza, where the games will be shown on 350-inch and 330-inch screens respectively. 
 
US-based football lovers can rock up to the NBC TV Headquarters at the Rockefeller Center in New York or the Zanuck Theater in LA, which will be showing the matches on an 85-inch and 350-inch screen respectively, and Canadians will be able to take in games at the International Broadcasting Center in Vancouver, on an 85-inch screen. 

While it’ll be free to attend the games and non-live 8K recordings, which will be screened when there are no live matches, you’ll have to get in touch with your location of choice and book a seat. 

In addition to the public broadcasts, NHK will be testing 8K transmissions over satellite next year with a view to the technology being standard by the time the Olympic Games come to Tokyo in 2020.
