Fifth season of BBC One’s Moving On to premiere on iPlayer

The BBC has announced that the upcoming fifth season of BBC One’s Moving On will premiere on iPlayer.

Following in the footsteps of the BBC Three’s comedy debuts and BBC Four’s Storyville documentary exclusives, Moving On will be the first mainstream BBC drama to debut on the on-demand service.

As well as this, every previous series of Moving On will be available to watch on demand.

This announcement comes after the BBC unveiled a new vision for the iPlayer last week. As well as promising 30 day catch-up windows and hinting at 4K Ultra HD streams, BBC director general Tony Hall revealed that the corporation would be launching more online exclusives, freeing people up from programme schedules.

Victoria Jaye, Head of TV Content, BBC iPlayer said: “We couldn’t be more delighted that Jimmy McGovern’s Moving On will be the first drama series to premiere on BBC iPlayer, in its entirety.

“As an established drama in the Daytime schedule, the series premiere on BBC iPlayer will be both a gift to loyal viewers and an unprecedented opportunity for a wider audience to enjoy these five stand-alone films across multiple devices, and at a time that suits them.”

Jaye points to a 43 per cent growth in BBC iPlayer usage across mobile devices with drama programmes accounting for almost a third of total viewing.

The first series of Moving On aired in 2009 and all four series have proved popular with daytime audiences. There’s no release date for the fifth series yet.

BBC iPlayer is available on Windows and Mac machines, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10, Sky, Virgin Media, YouView, Freetime from Freesat and selected smart TVs, Freeview HD boxes and connected Blu-ray players.
