WiFi from Virgin Media’s tube network is now available in 150 London Underground stations.
Passengers traveling through Wimbledon, Richmond, Morden, East Ham, Barking and Upminster tube can now hop on board Virgin Media’s WiFi service.
The great majority of passengers using the network can now connect for free. O2, EE, Three, Vodafone and Virgin Media mobile customers can sign up for free access – anyone else has to pay £2/day if they want to get on board.
Joe Lathan, Director of Broadband at Virgin Media, said: “This is a milestone moment for Virgin Media with 150 Tube stations and more than two and a half million devices now connected to WiFi on London Underground.
“Tube passengers have loved the WiFi service ever since we launched in time for London 2012. Now they can benefit from live travel information, news and social media in Tube stations across the capital.”
An infographic released by the ISP also revealed that despite only having two stations on the entire line, it’s London’s tiny Waterloo & City line that sees the most action, with the Waterloo station being the most popular.
Kings Cross and Oxford Street are the busiest stations in general, while the stations outside of Zone 1 with the highest use are Stockwell and Finsbury Park.
Virgin Media last announced new stations (Shepherds Bush, Bow Road, Ealing Broadway, Edgware Road (Bakerloo line), Hammersmith (Hammersmith and City line), Harrow-on-the-Hill and West Brompton) back in July, when Three customers were finally allowed to use the service for free.
The free Virgin Media WiFi service is available to 95 per cent of Londoners. Customers using other networks and service providers can sign up for daily, weekly and bi-monthly passes for £2, £5 and £15 respectively.
Virgin Media says that over 2.5 million devices are registered to use the service and 3TB of data is sent and received every day.
