A Freeview HD recorder for under £200 is good enough, but Sony’s 500GB box is good-looking and has BBC iPlayer to boot.

Sony’s SVR-HDT500B was part of its elegant 2011 Monolithic range, and features a minimalist granite-black design that blends into almost any environment.
Most importantly, it’s got twin HD tuners and a 500GB hard disc, which is enough for up to 300 hours of standard Freeview and 150 hours from BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV1 HD and Channel 4 HD.
If you plug the SVR-HDT500B into your broadband connection, you can also stream the BBC iPlayer, and it has twin USB ports so you can play back music, video and photos from USB sticks or hard discs.
There’s an HDMI port for easy connection to your HD TV, and if you have other Sony gear, you can control it via Bravia Sync.
