There’s a Q forming. Huawei’s MediaQ M310 is the latest Android-powered media streaming device to turn heads at Mobile World Congress and looks to take on Samsung’s HomeSync.
The Huawei MediaQ is a much smaller and unobtrusive device than Samsung’s proposition and is designed to be more out of sight than act as a set-top box centrepiece. Measuring a slender 65mm×65mm×14mm, the Media Q might be small but it packs a punch.
Huawei is promising a seamless streaming with the MediaQ. You’ll be able to share photos and stream videos and games from Android devices connected on the same WiFi network.
Classic Android games like Samurai II: Vengeance and Riptide GP come pre-installed on the MediaQ and you’ll be able to download other games from Google Play. There’s a 32GB drive inside for storing your games or movies, photos or music or whatever you want.
By comparison, the Samsung HomeSync has a bigger 1TB drive but the MediaQ looks like it has a bigger engine under the hood.
Huawei’s MediaQ is powered by a quad-core CPU backed up by 1GB of RAM, which should add up to a very fluid video streaming experience. Samsung HomeSync by comparison has a dual-core processor plus 1GB of RAM. The extra cores of the MediaQ suggest that the Huawei device will have an edge over the HomeSync in the gaming stakes but the proof of course will be in the pudding.
Huawei: ‘The MediaQ is a portal for all content’
Whether you want to play games, watch movies or stream music Huawei reckons the MediaQ will have you covered. Yang Zhirong, president for Huawei Home Devices is promising “a portal that enables all content to be accessed on any device.”
Huawei’s site mentions that you’ll be able to connect to PC and NAS drives on your network through the MediaQ or if you’ve got some old photos lying around on a memory card, there’s a microSD slot on the side.
Other connections and specs include two HDMI ports (one in and one out), a micro USB port, a 3-in-1 SPDIF/3.5mm/Mic mono port, two USB ports as long as a connection for mains power.
WiFi connections up to Wireless N are supported and the dual band antennas (2.4GHz and 5GHz) means that connections should be smoother.
Release dates, UK availability and price are all unavailable at this point but we’ll update once we know more.
