IFA 2014: LG blings curved OLED TV with Swarovski footballer-chic

It’s the old dilemma: how do you make a paper-thin 4mm curved TV screen using the latest OLED technology look kind of tacky? With Swarovski crystals, of course.

LG’s centrepiece for this week’s IFA consumer tech fest in Berlin will be a super-slim 55in curved OLED screen, decorated with 460 crystals of the Premier League WAG wannabe’s bling of choice.

The LG Electronics Thin Red Crystal TV features the self-lighting, low-power OLED pixels, which have become a Holy Grail for manufacturers to manufacture in large screens.

“We are excited to showcase this one-of-a kind TV — our first collaboration with designers from Swarovski — to visitors at IFA,” said Hyun-hwoi Ha, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“The epitome of luxury and refinement, Swarovski crystals and LG’s premium OLED TV complement each other perfectly.

“The crystals help to create an aesthetic that is, quite simply, gorgeous, while our OLED technology ensures a level of picture quality that is every bit as stunning as one could imagine.”

The OLED TV weighs just 16kg and will be produced in a limited edition for European customers by the end of the year – keep your eyes peeled in Wilmslow around Christmas.

The stand features around 460 Aurora Borealis crystals of in SS8, 10 and 12 sizes, which were applied by hand using specially made stencils.

LG do produce an Ultra HD 4K OLED for £20K, but the Thin Red Crystal TV is merely Full HD 1080p, which is just right for a customer base focused on their own match replays, the E! Entertainment channel and seeing their friends on Made In Chelsea.
