IFA 2014: Samsung to add Amazon and Netflix 4K Ultra HD TV apps

Samsung will partner up with Amazon, Netflix, Maxdome, Wuaki.tv and Chili to provide its smart TVs with shedloads of 4K Ultra HD content.

The TV manufacturer will launch Amazon’s Ultra HD on demand service in October around the world, while Netflix’s 4K app will be expanded beyond the UK to Europe later in the year, debuting with political drama House of Cards.

A whole heap of other 4K UHD content can be watched through Samsung’s other UK partnership with Wuaki.tv – another film and TV streaming service available in this country. If Italian VOD service Chili and Germany-based Maxdome ever launch in the UK, you’ll be able to watch them in super-high quality too via your £2k+ TV too.

Won Jin Lee, executive vice president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics, said: “The era of UHD has begun, and to continue even more widespread adoption, it is important to provide consumers with more choices when it comes to UHD content.

“We are providing our customers with a wider array of UHD content to enjoy on our ultra-immersive Curved UHD TVs.”

This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into the 4K Ultra HD content market. Before the World Cup, the company collaborated with Portuguese broadcaster RTP and Portugal Telecom to stream live warm-up matches to 4K TVs across the world using the MEO content service.

The next step in this super-quality TV revolution will be to develop a solution for secure Ultra HD content distribution with the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA).

Working with the SCSA’s founding partners, including SanDisk, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, and Western Digital, the company has launched a a 500GB external hard drive pre-loaded with 40 titles in 4K picture quality, including Star Trek Into Darkness and Life of Pi.
