Gamers playing PC game League of Legends have been unable to access updates because of UK anti-porn filters, according to reports.
In the game’s forums, gamers have complained that updates that inadvertently spell the word ‘sex’ are unable to get past filters ISPs use to block sexual content.
‘VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj’ and ‘XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj’ are just a couple of examples of files that have fallen foul of censors. This has resulted in errors alerting users that the file is not found.
At present, the filters are in use by a few people. These are typically ones who have signed up for a new broadband service since changes were bought in that meant new users have internet filters turned on by default. Gamers have not specified which ISP filters have blocked the content.
The problem was first discovered by a user on social news site Reddit. The very mention of the word thas triggered filters and the only way around the problem at present is to switch off the filters for have the files zipped up by others and emailed over.
Prime Minister David Cameron has backed Internet filters as a way of protecting children from questionable content. However, such filters do not work well in practice and have lead to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender charitiy websites being incorrectly classified as pornographic.
