My BT app lets broadband customers remote kill BT Home Hubs

BT broadband customers can now track orders, change engineer appointments and perform speed tests from their phones.

The new My BT app is a real Swiss Army knife; you can review your BT account at a glance, remotely restart your BT Home Hub if it’s playing up

You’ll also be able to check the status of BT services in your area, to see if there’s any issues with your BT broadband, TV or home phone services at a glance. If you need technical support you’ll be able to directly contact BT staff through the app.

Steve Wilson, digital director at BT Consumer, said: “The My BT app makes it easy for customers to keep track of their BT account.

We see a significant increase in the number of customers accessing the My BT website on a mobile device. We know that our customers lead increasingly busy lives and wanted to offer a smartphone app that gives them a helping hand in dealing with straightforward BT queries at a time that is convenient to them.”

While you’ll be able to manage the dates of BT engineer visits, My BT is not quite the same thing as Uber for Openreach engineers. This is something we think would be an excellent service, and not just for BT customers either.

If you’re getting an FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet)-based service from any ISP using the Openreach network, whether that’s TalkTalk, Sky, Zen, BT, Plusnet, and you opt for an engineer install, you might want to get a vague idea of where the big white van is.

Right now, roughly 18,000 vans in the 24,000-strong Openreach fleet have been fitted with GPS tracking systems, so this is a service BT, with the support of other ISPs could, in theory, roll out in the future. But that’s not what’s available today.

The My BT app, available now for iOS and Android phones, is a service that’s only available for BT customers.
