Netflix has contacted UK customers on older price plans to let them know they’ll soon be paying a higher monthly rate.
Early adopters of Netflix who signed up for the Standard subscription back in the day were asked to pay £5.99/month for a service that would let you stream TV and movies in SD and HD on up to two devices at once.

Loyal customers who had been with Netflix since day one were granted a temporary stay of execution, something which Netflix calls ‘grandfathering’.
But now that grandfatherly grace period is ending and loyal binge watchers will be faced with a choice; start paying that extra £1.49 for the same service, or downgrade to Netflix Basic, which lets you stream in SD only on one device for the same price – £5.99/month.
A Netflix spokesperson said: “Later this month, members in the UK will begin to be ungrandfathered.
“Beginning May, the price update is rolling out elsewhere based on member billing periods. Impacted members will be clearly notified by email and within the service, so that they have time to decide which plan/price point works best for them.”
No other price rises have been announced by Netflix so far. If you’re already paying £7.49/month for a Netflix Standard subscription, then your payments won’t be going up. Basic customers will continue to pay £5.99/month and Netflix Premium customers will continue to pay £8.99/month.
