Broadband Rollout Roundup is back on track. Now the weather is finally closer to what it should be for April, we’re starting to see some actual real figures on broadband rollout across the UK.
Cardiff now boasts a healthy number of next-gen fibre-based broadband courtesy of BT and a raft of new connections has been announced by the incumbent ISP for thousands of more homes and businesses across South Ayrshire, Killingworth, Whitley Bay and Swansea.
This week Broadband Rollout Roundup has a solid BT flavour so without further messing around we’ll crack on and detail which areas of the UK are getting superfast connections next.

Roath brings total number of Cardiff connections to 100,000
Cardiff now benefits from over 100,000 BT superfast connections thanks to work done at Roath.
Orders for FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) based broadband can now be taken from the Roath exchange. Note that just because you’re connected to Roath, your street cabinet might not have been given the go-ahead for fibre.
Eventually, more than 25,000 premises connected to Roath will be able to order in FTTC broadband once the work has been completed.
Note that these premises are being connected under BT’s own £2.5 billion commercial rollout plan, not the Superfast Cymru project.
Troon, South Ayrshire in line for 7,100 fibre connections
Over the coming weeks, BT engineers will connect 7,100 premises across Troon, South Ayrshire.
As a result of BT’s £2.5 billion investment a total of 39,000 homes will be connected across South Ayrshire, including properties in Ayr, Girvan, Prestwick and Alloway.
It’s over 9,000! Thousands of Killingworth families and firms in line for fibre-based fun
The Killingworth exchange in north Tyneside is now accepting orders for FTTC broadband, with more than 9,000 locations eventually able to get the next-gen services. BT engineers expect all premises to be able to order in FTTC broadband within the coming weeks.
As well as this, Whitley Bay is also due to be upgraded this year. By the end of Spring 2014, BT aims to have more than 735,000 homes and businesses across the North East will be able to benefit as a result of BT’s £2.5 billion fibre roll-out programme.
As the crow flies: 30,000 connections for Swansea and Ravenhill
More Welsh rollout as BT announced news to connect more than 30,000 homes and businesses in Swansea and Ravenhill will be connected over the coming weeks.
FTTC broadband will be available to premises connected to the respective Swansea and Ravenhill exchanges, joining the likes of Morriston, Mumbles, and Sketty.
By the end of Spring 2014 more than 600,000 homes and businesses across Wales will be able to benefit as a result of BT’s £2.5 billion fibre roll-out programme.
