Sky Atlantic’s Victorian horrorshow Penny Dreadful has been moved back for a May 5 launch.
Originally due to air on April 28, the star-studded British-American pulp show was moved back, with no apparent explanation from programme makers Showtime or Sky.
The series will see Eva Green, Josh Harnett, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway and Danny Sapani return to the demimonde but this season we’re promised that the tables will be turned on the hunters who quickly become the hunted.
Series creator and executive producer John Logan said: “This season Vanessa (Eva Green) and Ethan (Josh Hartnett) face new challenges and old enemies, and turn to each other for solace. Their intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together.”
Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear and Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear will return as will Helen McCrory as Evelyn Poole, the powerful spiritualist who promises to pose a greater threat to the protagonists this season.
One possible reason for Penny Dreadful being bumped back is that the fifth season of Game of Thrones is due to land on Sky Atlantic on April 13.
The fantasy epic is a runaway hit, the most watched HBO title of all time and also the most pirated TV show of all time. Penny Dreadful could risk being cast in the shadow of a hit franchise that’s already guaranteed a sixth season, whereas a third season of the dark psychological thriller has yet to be greenlit.
Penny Dreadful will be available to watch live and on catch-up from Sky TV/Sky On Demand and Now TV.
Sky Atlantic is one of the channels included with Sky TV’s Original Bundle, which costs £21.50/month. Now TV’s Entertainment passes cost £6.99/month and come with access to much of the choice entertainment content available from Sky.
