Roku Streaming Stick update speeds up Netflix start up times

Roku 3 and Streaming Stick owners will be able to start up Netflix much faster following an update.

Netflix and Roku have launched an version of that app that will start up almost immediately, letting viewers get their Orange Is The New Black fix more quickly.

A spokesman for Roku told Recombu: “Roku and Netflix have worked together to make the Netflix experience on Roku Streaming Stick even snappier. With this update, the Netflix channel now launches in just a few seconds.”

The new turbocharged Netflix for Roku has begun rolling out and will hit the Roku 3 and Roku Streaming Stick devices first. As these devices have faster processors than the Roku 2 and Roku LT, they’re better able to take advantage of the updated app.

For those who can’t wait, those with older devices can force an update manually by going to Settings from the Home screen, scrolling down to System Update and pressing Select on the remote. If there’s an update, your Roku will download and install it, although a spokeswoman told Recombu that she wasn’t certain that a manual update to an individual device would work as the updates are being carried out in batches on different days depending on the serial number of the device.

Roku hasn’t revealed if it’s working with the likes of Amazon to fine tune Prime Instant Video in a similar manner.

Earlier this month, ITV Player found its way onto Roku and Now TV boxes. Football fans can also use the Roku to catch up with the latest World Cup news and goals thanks to the BBC Sport app as well as watch games live on BBC iPlayer and ITV Player.
