Sky’s broadband base swells to 5.1m, continues to chase BT

Sky has announced that it now has over 5.1 million broadband subscribers, making it the UK’s second biggest ISP by customer base. 

The satellite TV, broadband and phone provider reported that it added an extra 110,000 subscribers in the last three months of 2013, taking it up to 5,127,000 up from 5,017,000. 

In the previous quarter, Sky broke the 5 million barrier, giving chase to broadband leader BT. BT is inching close to 7 million subscribers, putting it head and shoulders above the rest in terms of broadband provision.

Read more about Recombu Digital’s UK Broadband Customer League TableWhile BT is still top of the broadband premier league, Sky has reported that the percentage of customers which take all three services – broadband, TV and landline phone – has increased. 

The percentage of triple play customers has remained the same (36 per cent) since the last quarter, but this is in spite of the increase in broadband subscribers. Looking at figures from a year ago, Sky’s triple play base has increased by 534,000 representing a growth of 3 per cent. 

Sky’s TV customer base grew by 77,000 in the last quarter while the total number of Sky Talk phone customers swelled by 140,000 in the same time period. 

There’s no mention in Sky’s quarterly results of how many customers are taking Sky Fibre, the FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) based service. Since Sky softly launched fibre-based services in April 2012, it hasn’t reported on takeup in its results. 

Sky’s total customer base now stands at 14.9 million, up 113,000 since last quarter and up 461,000 from 12 months ago. 

Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: “We had a very good first six months of the year as we reaped the benefits of our broader-based approach to growth. 

“In a consumer environment that remains challenging, customers continued to choose to take Sky products in ever greater numbers in the run-up to Christmas, with Q2 growth up by over 40 per cent on last year.”
