Sky’s takeover of O2 and Be’s broadband business didn’t tip it over the five million broadband homes mark.
That’s despite a healthy three months to the end of June, which saw 119,000 homes sign up for Sky Broadband, including phone and line rental.
Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s chief executive, said: “It was a particularly significant quarter for home
communications as good organic growth, combined with the consolidation of the consumer
broadband and fixed-line telephony business acquired from O2, delivered well over a million
product additions.”

But Sky’s own breakdown of the takeover shows that it ended up with just 290,000 extra retail customers from O2 – Sky said quite a few were already TV susbcribers.
On the network side, Sky continued to expand its base of unbundled exchanges to 2,323, adding 121 more since the end of March.
One figure Sky isn’t talking about yet is the take-up of FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) broadband, which it’s only recently begun promoting heavily.
In its own results yesterday, BT noted Sky as a significant customer driving fibre broadband connections, and like many ISPs, Sky is expected to announce a self-install fibre broadband modem this autumn which will make signing up new customers cheaper and faster.
