Sky price rises coming summer 2016: Sports, bundles and Sky Q going up by £2/month

Sky has announced that prices of all of its TV packages will be rising from June 1 onwards.

The broadcaster and broadband provider says that on average, customer’s monthly outgoings will increase by ‘less than £3/month’.

The price rises also include new platform Sky Q, which has barely been out for a month and has only recently been made available to non-Sky Broadband customers

The announcement comes days after it was let slip that Sky’s 4K channels would be arriving ‘in the summer’, prompting speculation that the 2016/17 Premier League will be the first one broadcast in Ultra HD by Sky.

Sky’s also spent a lot of money on football rights, essentially £1.3 billion a year for the next three seasons. This will see it up the number of games it’s able to show from 116 to 126.

A Sky spokesperson said that new content was the reason for the price rises, but didn’t explicitly mention Premier League football. The spokesperson said: “We are always investing to keep Sky the best value entertainment choice for customers.

“This year we’ll bring customers even more unmissable original British drama, as well as the best US shows from HBO and Showtime. We’re launching a great Sky Kids app, as well a new Sky Sports channel giving all TV customers a selection of live sporting action. On average, bills will rise by less than £3 per month.”

Last week Sky announced Sky Sports Mix, a new channel designed to give non-Sky Sports subscribers a taste of what they’re missing. The Sky Kids app has been in development for a while now; we know that it will serve up a selection of children’s content and Monument Valley makers ustwo have been signed up to help design the user interface.

In other Sky news, the company recently announced plans to invest heavily in VR. Sky VR Studios will be dedicated to creating immersive sports and entertainment experiences, including racing and boxing simulations.
