Sky slapped for misleading Anytime+ ad

Sky AnytimeAdvertising watchdogs have rapped Sky for telling Anytime+ users they could get a free wireless network dongle.

The promotion claimed Sky customers could get a free wireless adapter for their Sky+HD box to watch the on-demand TV service, Sky Anytime+.

The Advertising Standards Agency received 86 complaints from Sky customers who found out they weren’t eligible because they’d already starting using Anytime+ with a wired connection.

The TV advert, broadcast in November 2011, said: “”Welcome to the world of better offers. If you’ve got Sky Movies 1 and 2 with Sky’s unlimited broadband, then this offer is just for you. Enjoy a free wireless connector for your Sky+ HD box so you can access Anytime+ and enjoy movies whenever you want.”

It was followed by on-screen text saying ‘New Anytime customers only’, but the viewers who complained thought this contradicted the main message.

The ASA agreed, and told Sky it can’t show the advert again without changes, and added: “We told Sky to ensure that they made significant conditions clear in future ads, and to ensure that qualifications did not contradict primary claims.”
