Sky Sports scores La Liga for another three seasons

Sky Sports has secured broadcast rights to La Liga games for the next three seasons. 

Coverage rights for the premier Spanish football league games were thought to have been snapped up by BT Sport, only for Sky Sports to steam in at the 89th minute and secure the deal. Sky’s bid may well have been motivated by the recent launch of BT Sport Europe

La Liga games have been shown on Sky Sports for nearly two decades and the latest deal will see the broadcaster remain the UK’s home for top Spanish football until 2019.

The final match of the Copa del Rey, Spain’s equivalent of the FA Cup, which was won last season by Barcelona. 

Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “This is fantastic news for Sky Sports and strengthens our position as the first choice of sport in the UK and Ireland.  The agreement means our viewers can enjoy the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, Bale and Neymar week in week out throughout the football season. 

“We’re proud to take our partnership with La Liga into its 20th year and remain the home of Spanish football for another three years.”

From 2016, Sky Sports will be bringing customers even more Premier League football – 126 games up from the current 116 – plus UEFA 2016 and  FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers, along with matches from the SPFL and Scottish Cup, American Major League Soccer and the Dutch Eredivisie.

Non-Sky TV subscribers can also stream matches without a contract with Now TV, which costs £6.99 for a 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass, £10.99 for a Sky Sports Week Pass or £31.99 for a Sky Sports Month Pass.
