Skype believes that video calling will be commonplace thanks to cameras in every piece of kit from TVs to phones by 2020.
Theo Short, Skype UK’s strategic partner manager, says integrating cameras for video calling into the living room will make video calling as common as voice.
In this short clip from a talk at IPTV World Forum 2012, he talks about two specific new developments – video cameras for TVs and all-in-one Skype cameras.
Samsung’s 2012 TV range will include a built-in high definition camera for features such as gesture control and making video calls over the internet alongside live TV.
All-in-one cameras – also expected from Samsung and already sold in the US by Tellylabs – combine the software and WiFi connection for a Skype call with an HD camera, so users can make calls without a PC by just plugging it into their TV’s HDMI socket.
