Sony announces Playstation TV UK launch date as November 14

Sony has announced its Playstation TV service will be hitting UK shores on November 14 and it’ll set you back €99 (£78) with three games preinstalled.

Playstation TV has been rumoured for some time and will take on other streaming TV services such as Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku, while also offering a games service on the side.

The console addition will ship with games – rumoured to be OlliOlli, Worms Revolution Extreme and Velocity Ultra – and will provide access to third-party streaming services such as Netflix and, we assume, Amazon Prime Video.

Brian Blau, research director of consumer technology at Gartner, told the BBC: “This could be a proper streaming device, one that could compete well with the other ones that are out there – the Apple, Roku, even things like Amazon FireTV.

“It’s not the most robust streaming service and it’s not the most robust gaming device but it’s enough of both for the price.”

In addition to connecting with other Sony services, including the ability to download, rent, or stream movies, TV shows and music from PlayStation Store, the console also supports Music Unlimited and other entertainment apps from the company.

The unit also has a slot for playing your Playstation Vita games, although Sony says not all will be compatible, and with the company’s Remote Play you can stream games from your PS4 to the TV connected to your PS TV.

As part of Sony’s Remote Play service, you can connect your Playstation Dualshock 3 and DualShock 4 controllers to the device, allowing you to play the games on the screen you usually watch TV on.

Playstation TV launched as Vita TV in Japan last year and was formerly announced for western markets at E3 in June.

Sony announced the launch date and price of Playstation TV at the Gamescom conference, where the company also released details about its cloud-based Playstation Now gaming platform that allows you to play games wherever you are, on a range of devices.
