TalkTalk to target Freeview upgraders with value box by April 2014

TalkTalk Essentials broadband subscribers will get a TV option with a free single-tuner YouView box with no hard disc for recording.

The Essentials TV box will be launched by the end of April 2014 as TalkTalk continues to target customers looking for an upgrade from Freeview.

The low-cost product will enable TalkTalk to offer it free to its lowest-tier broadband subscribers, just as it does with the full-featured Huawei YouView TalkTalk Plus TV box (below), which has a nominal value of £299.

Will Huawei also make TalkTalk’s Essentials TV box?

Read more about TalkTalk TVChief executive Dido Harding blogged about TalkTalk’s latest financial results, which show TalkTalk TV adding 12,000 homes per week.

She wrote: “Our research shows three quarters of these customers have upgraded from Freeview, and they tell us that they enjoy being able to pause, rewind and record live TV, access seven-day catch up and watch 4,000 shows and box sets free and on demand in the TalkTalk Player.

“It’s been a momentous year for TalkTalk and with plans to extend and scale our TV business even further, I don’t doubt that 2014 will be any less exciting.”

The Essentials TV box will still be able to access catch-up from the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5, and all of TalkTalk’s susbcription and on demand TV Boosts, but it won’t be able to record or pause live TV.

Other plans for TalkTalk TV include more specialist channels such as foreign language titles, education and entertainment, following the additions of the Star TV family, Karaoke, live concert and Digital Theatre channels.
