Over half of Virgin Media’s customers tap into 50Mbps superfast broadband

Virgin Media has announced its broadband subscribers base rose to almost 50,000 in Q3 this year, bringing the total up to 83,000 over the whole year. 56 per cent of these have a 50Mb or higher connection.

Although the increase is pretty impressive, compared to rivals BT and Sky, it’s small fry. BT brought on 80,000 new customers last quarter, whilst Sky added 75,000 in Q2.

Virgin Media boosted the maximum speeds its customers could obtain last year, doubling the achievable speeds in some areas around the UK. The company will be rolling out its doubly fast service on a step-by-step basis.

Virgin Media doubled its broadband speeds last year

Virgin Media said in its report: “The 431,000 increase in subscribers taking such speeds in Q3 was bolstered by our speed upgrade. We remain the clear speed leader in the fixed broadband market in the U.K., as confirmed by the U.K. regulator, Ofcom, in their latest broadband speeds report published in October 2014.”

The ISP has also had great success with its TV services. 64 per cent of all Virgin TV customers now have TiVo, with an extra 441,000 customers signing up to the service this year so far.

Mike Fries, Liberty (Virgin Media’s parent company) Global’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We continue leveraging the scale of our core distribution platform and the substantial investments we’re making to bring innovative products to market.”

“As a result, our third quarter results were driven in large part by record volume growth, underpinned by strong consumer demand for our next-generation video platforms, our market-leading broadband speeds, and our increasingly converged products that provide our customers with connectivity and entertainment outside of the home.”

Although the company wants to focus on its superfast broadband service, the company also reported it brought on 35,000 new ADSL customers, which is double that of the same quarter last year, but less than it reported last quarter.
