You won’t be able to buy Sky Sports 1 or 2 on their own with Virgin TV from June onwards.
The cable company is getting rid of the option to add individual Sky Sports channels to a Virgin TV package, forcing customers to opt for a bundle of channels instead.
Currently you can take Sky Sports 1, home of Sky’s Premier League football coverage, or Sky Sports 2 for £21.50/month extra. This is cheaper than going for the Sky Sports Collection – which gives you Sky Sports 1-5 plus Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports News HQ – for £29.25/month.
As we reported last month, the standard price of the Sky Sports Collection on Virgin Media will be going up to £31.75/month in June.
Sky TV customers will similarly be paying £2.50 more for their Sky Sports bundles every month from June 1 onwards.
While this is bad news for customers who only wanted to take the one channel, we can confirm that the £7/month HD Premium required to watch Sky Sports games in HD is not going up in price.
Customers taking the Big Kahuna Bundle (up to 200Mbps unlimited broadband, 230 digital TV channels and unlimited weekend landline calls) will be also able to add the Sky Sports Collection for the lower rate of £19/month for the first 12 months and £30.50/month thereafter.
The Big Kahuna bundle costs £42/month for the first year then £55/month for the last six months. On top of this, you’ll have to pay for Virgin Phone line rental, which is charged at either £17.99/month or £184 for 12 months’ worth.
If you wanted to throw BT Sport into the mix you’d be better off going for the Big Kahuna Sports bundle.
This gives you all of the above plus the Sky Sports channels and BT Sport channels in SD and HD for £61/month for the first 12 months then £85.50/month for the last six, plus line rental.
The BT Sport channels normally cost £18/month extra with Virgin TV packages, so going for the Big Kahuna Sports bundle would save you just over £200, if you were thinking about adding those as well.
Virgin TV packages start at £20/month on their own, with no line rental needed. This means at the very least, you’ll be paying £51.75/month at the very least if you want to watch Sky Sports on Virgin TV.
