Free anime streaming service Viewster has new launched apps for iOS and Android that work with Chromecast.
Fans of Japanese and Korean films, TV and animation can now get updates when new episodes are available thanks to the ‘follow’ function, which delivers push notifications to your device.
The new apps improve greatly on the older apps, bringing a design that’s better optimised for vertical thumb scrolling. Viewster’s CEO Kai Henniges, said that the changes came about following growth in requests from mobile devices.
“Forty-eight per cent of our users access Viewster via tablet or mobile phone, where they account for seventy-four per cent of all video views,” Henniges said. “The mobile device is the most flexible to use, and our young audience uses it to binge-watch the shows they are passionate about.”

While anime and content from Japanese and Korean markets dominates Viewster’s 12,000+ strong library, there’s also sci-fi and fantasy, horror, crime and drama titles from all over the world, including the US-Mexican remake of Scandinavian police drama The Bridge – which was in turn remade partially over here as The Tunnel, by Sky and CANAL+.
Other non-Asian titles include CBC’s adaptation of Douglas Coupland’s jPod and (comically, for UK viewers) ITV’s Martin Clunes vehicle Doc Martin.
Viewster is a free, ad-supported service that promises no adverts for the first two minutes of watching.
