1Gbps fibre for 20,000 homes by 2012

Hyperoptic, the all-fibre ISP based in London, has announced plans to double its footprint by the end of the year.

Hyperoptic has to date wired up apartment blocks and premises in Barnet, Croydon, Greenwich, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster – this works out at 10,000 homes in total.

By the end of 2012 Hyperoptic plans to take this figure to 20,000 as it extends across the capital.

But it’s not all about Londoners getting fibre – we know that Hyperoptic has plans for elsewhere in the UK which makes today’s other announcement – the goal to connect a half a million homes in the next five years – all the more exciting.

Hyperoptic is still quiet on where it plans to lay its cables next – our money’s on Birmingham or Manchester. More on this when we hear it – in the meantime, check out our interview with Hyperoptic’s managing director Dana Pressman Tobak and our piece on Hyperoptic piping next-gen broadband into City Nites’ luxury pads.
