LTE’s new 1080p Projector lets you stream videos directly from YouTube.
Dual-use products are par for the course at CES, but ZTE’s 1080p projector is a new one on us. The compact DLP projector comes with Wi-Di and can beam images of up to 120in across on to a projector screen. The Android-based device can also be used as a wireless hotspot providing LTE connectivity for up to eight devices.
The ZTE Projector Hotspot runs Android 4.2 and merges useful elements such as onboard photo and video storage and the ability to run apps and access the web with its clever projection tricks. It has a brightness of 100 Ansi lumens and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
Using its 4in (800×480-pixel) touchscreen you’ll be able to navigate to a website you want to show or a YouTube video you want to play and project the webpage or video directly from the device. If the content you want to show off is stored on a connected device, its LTE mobile broadband connection will be able to project content from that phone or tablet too using wireless mirroring.
This should make the pico projector a really useful tool in situations where you’re collaborating with several people and each want to show off something that’s stored on your device. You’ll also be able to use the ZTE Projector Hotspot to play movies on any of the connected devices.
As well as being able to project content wirelessly, the projector has an HDMI port so it can be hooked up to a laptop. Again, games and movies come to mind as likely uses here. In common with Android phones and tablets, the pico projector will have a headphone jack and will support Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi. A USB port, audio-out and an HDMI port accepting 1080p input will also feature.
The projector measures 4.7×4.7×1.1in (120x120x28.5mm), has a 5,000mAh battery and weighs 400g. ZTE has not said how much onboard storage the projector will have, and there’s no mention of an SD card or microSD card slot on the device’s spec list.
ZTE hasn’t yet stated how much the Projector Hotspot will cost, but did state that the device will use US-LTE and will launch in the US sometime this year. The device is likely to be sold through mobile operators, details of which have yet to be announced.
