Microsoft’s Surface 2 has just hit UK pre-order toting 4G connectivity. Should hit UK stores early next month.
If you’re after a 4G tablet right now, pickings are pretty slim, even more so if you’re after one running Windows RT 8.1. You’re essentially left with the Nokia Lumia 2520 and not much else, that is, until now. Microsoft has just confirmed that it’s bringing a 4G-connected version of its latest Surface 2 tablet to the UK.
We commended the Surface 2 for its strong, sturdy design and the added benefit of Microsoft’s new Touch and Type covers, which up the productivity capabilities it offers. Being one of Microsoft’s prized slates, the Surface 2 comes pre-installed with Office, a host of Bing-flavoured apps from health, to food, to news and even more applications are downloadable via the Windows Store.
Specs-wise, the Surface 2 sports Nvidia’s Tegra 4 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 10.6-inch Full HD display and tons of ports. With full-sized USB 3.0 ports, it can take external peripherals from mice to optical drives and hard drives, not to mention you can pull a more desktop like computing experience out of it using the external display port connection.
If you want to stay mobile however, its newfound ability to connect wherever you are should serve as a worthy addition. The new 4G Surface 2 is better suited to go toe-to-toe with the Lumia 2520, which boasts 4G LTE connectivity out of the box.
The price for superfast Windows RT on-the-go in Surface form? £539 sans Touch 2 or Type 2 covers. Unlike the WiFi-only Surface 2, which comes with 32GB and 64GB storage options, the 4G LTE model is presently only available in 64GB configuration, exactly £100 more than the non-4G model.
By comparison, the Lumia 2520 is only available with half the amount of storage for £399.95 and the 64GB, 4G iPad Air will set you back £659.
