6.8 million new Android and iPhones activated on Christmas Day 2011

A million Samsung Galaxy Notes may have been shifted since launch, but while impressive, it’s still a small part of the bigger picture. It’s thought that over 6 million Android and Apple iPhones were activated on Christmas Day 2011. This gives us some indication of what you all found under your trees last Sunday morning.

The Guardian reports that 6.8 million new Android and Apple devices were activated worldwide over the festive period, with Google’s Andy Rubin tweeting that 3.7 million Android devices were activated for the first time.

Mobile data agency Flurry reported that over 1 billion apps and games were downloaded. Highlights including family-friendly favourite Grand Theft Auto III and the popular Scrabble-esque game Words With Friends.

Facebook Messenger, Skype and WhatsApp topped the free download charts for iTunes and the Android Market, proving that there’s plenty of love for free, cross-platform IM clients.

As for us, well we spent time with the Motorola MOTOACTIV, messed around with these photo apps on our iPhone 4S, and played real-life, old school Scrabble with our families.
