Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Battle of the premium Windows 10 phones

Acer’s first official phone of 2016 is the Liquid Jade Primo, a 5.5-inch Windows 10 mobile with premium specs that’s set to take on Microsoft’s own Lumia 950. But which Windows 10 phone is best for you? Here’s a direct comparison of the Liquid Jade Primo and Lumia 950 specs and features.

Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Design

One of our few moans about the Lumia 950’s hardware was its rather cheap look and feel. It’s not a bad looking mobile by any means, but that plastic frame doesn’t exactly scream £400 smartphone, and seems at odds with the premium specs.

Acer’s Liquid Jade Primo sports a brushed metal design that, unlike the Lumia 950, can’t be prised open to access the battery. While Microsoft’s Lumia settles for a boxy finish, the Jade Primo opts for a curvy, slender design that makes the 5.5-inch device a better fit in the palm.

Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Screen and media

The Jade Primo is a bigger beast than the Lumia 950, sporting a 5.5-inch screen compared with a 5.2-incher. That’s actually closer in size to the Lumia 950 XL, an enlarged version of the Lumia 950 sporting a 5.7-inch screen.

When it comes to image clarity, the winner here is Microsoft’s baby. The Lumia 950 sports a gorgeous Quad HD screen that keeps photos, videos and everything else impressively sharp. Meanwhile the Jade Primo sticks with a Full HD display that should still do the job nicely for streaming video, but isn’t as crisp.

Both phones pack in 32GB of storage space, which can be expanded via microSD memory cards.

You can also hook up both of these Windows phones to a larger screen and use them like a desktop computer, thanks to the Windows 10 Continuum feature.

Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Performance and battery life

When it comes to performance, there should be nothing between the Jade Primo and Lumia 950. Both phones rock a Snapdragon 808 processor, backed up by 3GB of RAM, which makes for smooth everyday performance and gaming.

We’re yet to test the Liquid Jade Primo’s battery life, but the Lumia 950 enjoys just over 24 hours of life between charges.

Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Cameras

The Lumia 950 sports one of the better phone cameras of 2015, a 20-megapixel PureView snapper that’s dependable for everyday shooting. The simple interface allows for quick and easy automatic shooting, but also expands to allow for manual controls. You also have a decent 5-megapixel camera for taking selfies, which captures sharp images.

The only real weakness of the Lumia 950’s camera is the video recording capabilities. The lack of decent image stabilisation, plus the occasional struggle to focus, makes for some dodgy home movies compared with rivals.

The Liquid Jade Primo sports a 21-megapixel f/2.2 rear camera that can record in 4K, plus an 8-megapixel camera around the front. Acer’s phone may beat the Lumia 950 in terms of sheer camera specs, but we doubt there will be much difference in terms of photo quality and Microsoft’s phone may win out in a direct photo comparison.

Acer Liquid Jade Primo vs Microsoft Lumia 950: Price

Microsoft’s Lumia 950 is available at a great price, from just £419 here in the UK. Acer’s Liquid Jade Primo doesn’t have a UK price just yet but it will be landing in Europe for €569 – roughly £80 more expensive than the Lumia. That could be a decisive factor when you come to choose your new Windows 10 smartphone.
