Acer unleashes the Liquid X2 – a monster with three SIMs and a giant battery

At Acer’s annual product launch event in New York we met the Liquid X2, a phone that boasts tri-SIM support and a massive 4000mAh battery.

Amidst Acer’s product-rich New York event the company reminded us of two innocuous devices which made a fleeting appearance on the mobile scene last year. Why? Because they were the basis for a new monster smartphone – the Liquid X2.

Last year’s Liquid X1 was a middling phablet that ushered itself in as one of Acer’s first octa-core powered smartphones. Meanwhile the little known Liquid E700 was one of the first of the company’s handsets to offer tri-SIM support and to this day it remains one of a select bunch.

For the high-flying businessman or woman, the lovechild of these two phones might make for a compelling upgrade. The Liquid X2 teased us from behind a glass case, showcasing not only a 64-bit octa-core chip and support for three SIM-cards, but also the inclusion of a mammoth 4000mAh battery.

For most this sounds like an excellent travel companion, complete with a 5.5-inch HD display for enjoying media, that big cell will let you enjoy at least a couple of movies and you could happily hop from the UK, to the US, to Taiwan without ever having to swap out your SIM card.

Whilst additional details on the Liquid X2 are still notably slim we did learn that it boasts of one other trick – its case. Acer has admitted that it still hasn’t come up with a “sexy” name for the Liquid X2’s specialised leatherette case, but the cutout that sits over the display will accommodate a range of functionality, not unlike HTC’s DotView cover.

Examples shown ranged from media controls, to a flashlight, voice searching, connectivity widgets and more, but the functionality it could offer has seemingly endless potential.

We don’t yet have pricing or availability information on the Liquid X2 and it might not even make it to our fair shores, but we’re hoping it does. With specs like these it has the potential to rise to the top of our battery testing charts, or at least the ability to satiate my YouTube addiction.
