All 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia phones to get Android ICS update

Whilst getting our hands on several new forthcoming phones from Sony Ericsson last night, it was also revealed that these new phones, alongside the rest of the Android-powered Xperia smartphone range, will be getting an upgrade to the next version; the hotly anticipated Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

That’s version 4.0, and looks set to converge both tablet Android (currently Honeycomb) and smartphone Android (known as Gingerbread.) Speaking to SoMobile, the representative seemed to agree with the Oct-Nov date for Android ICS; Google’s Eric Schmidt has confirmed the loose release date.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich looks set to give the mobile OS another facelift, resembling something closer to Android Honeycomb’s Tron colour palette. Function-wise, expect richer widgets and plenty more NFC functionality, like the ability to share content between NFC-capable devices.

We can also expect a more united front when it comes to Android updates, meaning less waiting around for your phone (and phone network) to release the latest software.
