All Windows Phone 8 mobiles to get Windows 10 update

A tweet from the official Lumia Twitter account has confirmed that all Windows Phone 8 mobiles will get updated to Windows 10 in the future.

This week we’ve reported on both the new Microsoft Lumia 535, the first device without Nokia branding, and also a leak from a factory which claims that production of the Microsoft Lumia 940 is in full swing, so you could be forgiven for thinking that Microsoft’s sights were set firmly on the future. However, a tweet from the Lumia Twitter account has made a bold claim regarding Windows 10 and legacy support for older Windows Phone 8 devices.

The tweet reads “There will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices 🙂 And we will release new Windows 10 models in the future!” which is a fairly definitive affirmation that this will be happening. The account isn’t the official Microsoft news channel, but it is the verified Lumia one, which is almost as good in our humble opinion.

There’s been no further comment or corroboration from any other sources within Microsoft at this stage, but an official channel speaking out about such an important issue is encouraging. Obviously there will be more than few hoops to jump through before the new software can be bought to a bunch of devices with differing capabilities, but the people in the know are apparently on the case, which is great news for consumers.

The decision to step-up and improve support for older devices is very much in vogue at the moment. Both Google and Apple have recently touched on the subject of extending support for older hardware too, and it’s something which should be welcomed, for both financial and environmental reasons.
