Amazon has confirmed the Amazon Appstore and Google Play Store rival will be moving across the pond and finally launching in the UK.
The Amazon Appstore, which has grown in popularity enormously over the past few years, has fantastic deals and offers an interesting range of Android applications, it’s remained unavailable, deals and all in the UK, until now. It would appear that plans are in motion to bring the Amazon Appstore, not just to the UK, but to many parts of Europe this summer.
Android Authority revealed Amazon has invited developers to submit apps for the European store, which will be distributed in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain first, before ‘further global expansion.’
Jim Adkins VP of the Amazon Appstore says: ‘We’re excited to open the door to even more opportunity by expanding app sales outside the U.S. We see tremendous potential for current developers in our distribution program to grow with the international expansion. We also encourage new developers to join and participate in the platform’s growth.”
All apps currently in the Android Appstore will be available internationally, but developers can choose which countries apps will be sold in. More information can be found at the Amazon Mobile App Distribution Portal.
Not only does this mean free Android apps for everyone and an alternative to the Google Play Store, but the Appstore also serves one of Amazon’s most popular self-made products in the US, the Kindle Fire (above), so it could mean Amazon’s 7-inch tablet will finally be coming to the UK.
We’ll no doubt go hands on with the application when it does officially launch in the UK and hope that in the meantime, Google doesn’t deliberate over launch dates.
