Amazon has announced that the latest versions of its Kindle ebook reader – the Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G – are now available for pre-order in the UK.
As the name suggests, Kindle Touch 3G adds a touch screen and comes with 3G wireless access to download content. The connection allows users to make book purchases and download magazine or newspaper content, with no monthly fee or annual contract.
The 3G service is available in countries around the world (see a map of coverage here), with an Edge/GPRS service filling in in some areas. However, the 3G connection won’t allow free web browsing.
The Kindle Touch is available for £109, while the Kindle Touch 3G sells for £169. Devices will ship to UK customers on 27 April 2012.
Amazon said the Kindle has been the best selling product at Amazon.co.uk since its introduction in 2010 and was responsible for a rise in book sales.
“We continue to see that people read more with Kindle – readers in the UK buy an average of four times the number of books they purchased prior to owning a Kindle. With the launch of Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G we expect to see this reading renaissance continue,” said Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, Kindle, Amazon EU Sàrl.
Analyst reports in January 2012 claimed the Amazon Kindle Fire had sold six million copies in Q4 2011, although the company is thought to make a $10 loss on every Kindle Fire tablet sold.
