Android 2.4 will be Ice Cream Sandwich, may bring Honeycomb features to phones

So, it looks like the next version of Android – 2.4 – is to be called Ice Cream Sandwich, instead of just plain old Ice Cream. According to TechCrunch, Andy Rubin let slip the name of the new Android OS during a chat about the Nexus S a month ago.

As well as the new name it’s expected that Android 2.4 will bring with it much of the visual flair that Android 3.0/Honeycomb has in spades.

Obviously the UI will have to be configured differently for phones’ smaller screens. But we imagine things like access to Google’s eBook store, as well as that fresh new design will make the transition.

We’re speculating here but we can see something like Amazon’s Kindle Whispersync being worked into Android 2.4. So if you started reading a Google eBook on your Android 2.4 phone, you’d be able to pick up where you left off on your Android 3.0 tablet.

It’s expected that Android 2.4/Ice Cream Sandwich will be officially demoed at Google’s I/O event on the 10 and 11th of May, with a mid-summer release due to follow.
