App Friday: SwiftKey 3 for Android

SwiftKey logoTouchType Limited’s popular Android keyboard application SwiftKey is now in its third major release, with the addition of new themes, Smart Space and some significant UI tweaks.

The SwiftKey keyboard is the cream of third-party Android alternatives, which depending on your preference, will even win out over Swype. Either way, the stock Android keyboard experience will never feel the same again.

Terms of endearment, common personalised abbreviations, names and slang terminology are all learnt by the app to help prediction and provide a slicker user experience. In the short time we spent putting SwiftKey 3 to the test, we were able to write entire messages without even touching the spacebar.

As well as learning your typing habits, the app is able to analyse your existing written interactions from Facebook, Twitter, Gmail and so on, providing it with even greater accuracy and enhanced powers of prediction. For existing SwiftKey users, it’s recommended that you uninstall previous versions before bringing SwiftKey 3 onboard your device.

We’ve already made mention of the new Smart Space feature, which instills incorrect space detection in sentences, as well as the existing word and letter correction. TouchType Ltd has also tweaked the UI on three fronts, firstly the spacebar is larger, making it easy to confirm your input, a smart punctuation key provides quick access to common punctuation and two new themes have graced the interface; Cobalt (the new default theme) and the ICS-appropriate Holo theme.

SwiftKey 3 is an amazing Android text input alternative, especially if thus far you’ve stuck to the stock experience and for the remainder of its launch week, it’s available for half price on Google Play at just £1.49. We say check it out and never fear sending an misspelled text again.
