Apple App Store does over 15 billion downloads: 5 billion in under 6 months

iPhone and iPad users have now downloaded a dizzying 15 billion app downloads. Apple’s announcement comes following its competition at teh start of the year celebrating its 10 billionth download. That works out at slightly under 1 billion downloads per month since the start of 2011.

The App Store currently houses more than 425,000 apps, with iPad apps numbering around 100,000.

Apple announced at this year’s developer conference, WWDC, that it has paid out more than $2.5 billion to app developers since launching the app store.

Apple brought in several big wig app developers to comment on the new milestone. “iPad provides us with an unparalleled mobile device for creating gorgeous, immersive games,” said Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games.

He added: “Infinity Blade has been a runaway hit with customers around the world and we couldn’t be more excited about our success on iOS devices.”

“We’re bringing Martha Stewart, Angelina Ballerina, Sesame Street and many more of the world’s most popular books and magazines to iPad,” said Nicholas Callaway, CEO of Callaway Digital Arts. “We knew the iPad was going to be a revolutionary storytelling device, but never could have anticipated it would become so popular, so quickly.”

Oli Christie from Neon Play, whose Paper Glider was the 10 billionth app to be downloaded back in January, added “it’s incredible that just six months later [Apple] had achieved another 5 billion downloads. Neon Play is proud to have achieved 21 million of those download numbers and we’re creating some great new games for iOS, including our first social game. Plus we’re about to launch Paper Glider on Nokia and Android, so we look forward with great anticipation to see how they perform.”
