After weeks of speculation Apple has now officially confirmed the latest version of its operating system iOS 6, revealing some of the 200 new features (check out the highlights here), device compatibility and confirming an autumn launch, which is also when we expect the iPhone 5 launch to occur.
The announcement was made at Apple’s annual developers conference; WWDC, where CEO Tim Cook took to the stage to reveal a selection of MacBook and OS X Mountain Lion. Scott Forstall, Apple’s head of iOS then officially announced iOS 6, which is a significant upgrade, with Apple Maps, Facebook Integration, Siri with local search and Facetime over 3G among the dozens of new improvements.
Apple has confirmed the iOS 6 beta will be available now so developers can begin to harness features of the new OS. The consumer launch of iOS 6 is coming in ‘the fall,’ which is when it’s fair to say we can expect to see the new iPhone.
Recently every time Apple has launched a new version of iOS it has been accompanied by a new phone – last year iOS 5 hit in October along with the Apple iPhone 4S, so within four or five months we should know all about the new iPhone 5.
Apple has confirmed iOS 6 will be available for the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 – of course – and most interestingly the older iPhone 3GS as a free software update. The iPod Touch fourth generation will also be updated. Regarding the iPad, well the new iPad and iPad 2 will both be getting the update, but sadly not the original iPad.
