Apple iPad Air 2: All the facts

As details emerge on the new Apple iPad Air 2 tablet, set for UK release in Autumn 2014, we take a look at the likely specs and features.

Although the iPad Air 2 isn’t set to launch for another few months, apparently production is already in full swing on Apple’s next full-sized tablet. The main improvements look to be boosted cameras and a faster processor, with the screen and design remaining much the same.

Apple IPad Air 2 specs and UK price and release date info

The original iPad Air, which came out at the end of 2013, was a beautifully light 9.7-inch tablet, and Apple isn’t messing with that awesome design. The iPad Air 2 will keep the same look and feel, with a 7.5mm chassis and 478g weight, plus the same 9.7-inch Retina display. We do expect to see the Touch ID fingerprint scanner make an appearance, however, to replace those pesky PIN codes and passwords.

The iPad Air’s 5-megapixel rear camera will apparently get a boost to an 8-megapixel snapper, good timing as Apple’s new iOS 8 will feature some seriously good photo editing features and the ability to quickly share snaps while chatting. Great news, selfie fans – the FaceTime camera will also get an upgrade to a 1.5-megapixel snapper.

The last major upgrade will be the processor. Apple’s new A8 processor is expected to deliver 50% better performance over the iPad Air, not that we’ve noticed any slowdown in last year’s tablet yet.

We expect to see the iPad Air 2 lauched in October, with the first retail units hitting the UK in November from £399-ish, just in time for Christmas. Stick it on your list to Santa right now, kiddies, as we’re sure it’ll be another excellent device – although if you already own the original iPad Air, there’s probably not much here to tempt you.
