Apple iPhone 5 to add 3D camera?

Could the next version of the Apple iPhone add a 3D camera to its bag of tricks, with the iPad following suit soon after the iPhone 5?

Speculation that Apple devices will soon add an extra dimension has been fuelled by news that Apple has filed a patent relating to 3D photography.

“A user may take video of a home while walking through the home and the image sensing device could use the calculated depth and surface detail information to create a three-dimensional model of the home,” Apple said in the patent filing, which was released by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

“The depth and surface detail information of multiple photographs or video stills may then be matched to construct a seamless composite three-dimensional model that combines the surface detail and depth from each of the photos or video.”

According to the patent filing, the technology wouldn’t be reserved for iPhones and iPads and could be used in wider products such as “digital cameras, personal computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile telephones, a standalone camera.”

Will a 3D snapper be one of the rumours that makes it into the iPhone 5, along with increased RAM, more storage, Gorilla Glass 2 and a quad-core ARM A6 processor?

Well, this is not the first time Apple has been suspected of dabbling in 3D, although no iOS product has yet included the technology. Come October 2012, all should be revealed…
