Apple may have more to announce than the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S) at its press conference this evening. The latest from the rumour mill suggests that Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook may also be announcing a new feature for the App Store allowing users to rent apps rather than purchasing them.
Hints at the new feature were found nestling inside the code of the latest iTunes beta, which included references to both renting apps and a function allowing their removal at the end of the rental period. That was only a beta, of course, so we can’t be sure that this new feature will be making an appearance on stage in Cupertino tonight, but there’s an internet consensus that app rentals are the real deal and are in the works.
Of course, the main focus of tonight’s Apple conference is the much-rumoured next model of the iPhone. There’s been plenty of debate and evidence both ways that Apple will be releasing either a fully-fledged iPhone 5 or simply giving its current iPhone 4 a spec-bump and branding it an iPhone 4S (that said, there’s always a possibility they’ll do both).
