After lying dormant for a little while, talk of a high-quality low-cost Google tablet has seen a resurgence of late. A partnership between the Californian tech giant and Taiwanese electronics masters Asus has apparently been formed in order to create a slate which many have dubbed the ‘Nexus tablet’.
A source, apparently from the tablet’s supply chain informed DigiTimes that a finished product is expected to roll out of factories by June this year. A supposed 600,000 units comprised of Google’s new tab will then make their way to stores and to consumers by July.
Although naturally neither Asus nor Google refuse to comment on the existence of such a product, a number of ideas being thrown about seem to have stuck. Most notably the existence of a 7-inch Android-based (naturally) tablet under production from the two companies.
Expected to take on the likes of Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire in both price and performance, with modest specifications, the Nexus tablet will no doubt offer up a stock Android experience running Ice Cream Sandwich at launch. Although if the July release is to be heeded an upgrade to Android 5.0 could come around the OS’s birthday on November 5th. It’s worth noting the Asus MeMo Pad could have been a good jump off point for the creation of the Nexus tab.
Based on the size, the predicted price point (around $149-$199) and the current 7-inch rivals, the companies are apparently expecting sales in region of 2-2.5million units sold before the end of 2012. Curious? Us too.
