Asus reveals the Transformer Book V, the smartphone that turns into a laptop as well as a tablet, and also sports both Android and Windows. Talk about your all-in-one hybrids…
If you’re unfortunate enough to have recently lost your phone, tablet and laptop in a freak golfing accident, never fear – Asus has launched its Transformer Book V over at Computex 2014, which converts into all three devices and rocks both Android and full Windows 8.1. All bases covered, then.
The Transformer Book V rocks a similar design to the Asus Padfone, a smartphone which slides neatly into a tablet dock to give you a bigger screen for enjoying media and getting your productive hat on. But now things are taken to a whole new dimension with an attachable keyboard. Stick the 5-inch phone into the 12.5-inch tablet dock, and then slap on the keyboard, and cor blimey, your phone’s now a laptop.
While the phone itself runs Android, the dock sports full Windows 8.1 running on its very own Intel Core architecture, and you can apparently swap between the two OS’s simply by tapping a button on the keyboard. And while the phone is docked up, you can also access all of its files directly on the tablet screen.
As for the rest of the specs, the phone packs in an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facer. Connect to the 0.8kg tablet (bit hefty, that) and you’ll get up to 128GB of extra storage and an extra battery that’s good for ten hours of web browsing, while the keyboard dock boasts up to 1TB of fresh storage space.
Other Asus tablets and tech unveiled at Computex 2014
Asus is known for unveiling innovative products well before they actually hit stores, and in the UK we occasionally don’t see them at all, so don’t start queuing outside Curry’s just yet. However, Asus did also launch the new Asus Transformer Book Flip, a Windows 8.1 laptop powered by Intel Core, which sports a keyboard that can be bent right back to create a Full HD tablet. Expect to see it in the UK at the end of June, priced from £449.
Asus also revealed a ton of new Android KitKat tablets (the MeMO Pad 8, Fonepad 7 and 8 and new Transformer Pad) all sporting 64-bit Intel Atom processors. The MeMO Pad 8 is an 8-inch tab that will cost from just £119 when it hits the UK on June 19 (a 4G version is also due out), while the new Transformer Pad will cost just £239, seemingly good value for a 10-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard dock.
