BBM for iOS and Android racked up 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours

BBM was finally released for iOS and Android at the beginning of the week, and the app has proven to be surprisingly popular. BlackBerry says that its messaging service was downloaded over 10 million times across both platforms in the first 24 hours of release.

Still, it’s hard to see the appeal of BBM given the current lay of the land. There are so many messaging options out there that already have huge user bases, and BBM still requires the archaic method of sharing out a PIN number to chat with friends. At least those ditching BlackBerry handsets can rest easy knowing that BBM will be waiting for them on their phone of choice.

As for what’s next, BlackBerry says that it’s working to bring additional features across, including BBM Voice, BBM Video, and BBM Channels.
