Bejeweled Blitz to go freemium on iOS, new version of Bejeweled incoming

Everyone’s favourite ‘match three of a kind’ timewaster is set to go freemium on iPhones and iPod Touches.

Bejeweled Blitz is set to be a standalone free app that’ll be launched alongside an all-new sequel to Bejeweled, effectively replacing the Bejeweled 2 + Blitz app that’s currently sitting ion the App Store.

The new version of Bejeweled (69p) will feature improved hi-res graphics including support for Retina Display iPhones, unlockable achievements, and three game modes.

The freemium Bejeweled Blitz will give players 60 second bursts of gem-aligning action, as well as having its graphics bumped up for Retina Display devices.

According to PopCap Games’ Giordano Bruno, “Bejeweled is the second best-selling mobile game of all time, behind only Tetris,” which is a pretty mean feat. If pushed to name the second best-selling mobile game wed’ve instinctively plucked for Angry Birds.

“With nearly 40 million mobile units sold over the past eight years, Bejeweled is the second best-selling mobile game of all time, behind only Tetris. As we strive to reach virtually everyone with a mobile communications device, PopCap will continue to make games that are even more accessible to that ever-expanding global audience. We’re taking a critical step toward this goal with the introduction of these new Bejeweled titles that will enhance our offerings on the iPhone for years to come.”

At the time of writing, Bejeweled 2 + Blitz remains in place on the App Store in the UK.
