Golf fans will be aware the Open Championship is currently taking place at Royal St Georges, but if you’ve been inspired by the action and want to keep up with the news, find a bit more about golf or just want to play some good golfing games, here’s our picks of the best iPhone and Android golfing apps. Let us know below if there are any we’ve missed….

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12

Sadly now more famous recently for his off-the-green activities, that hasn’t stopped the highly successful Tiger Woods PGA Tour app coming out. Far more serious than Let’s Golf (below) it takes time to master, with real-life factors to take into consideration such as the wind, Graphics are fantastic, as you take in the most famous golf courses in the world. For golf fans this is still the ultimate golf game.


Flick Golf

Developed by Full Fat Games, Flick Golf is a simple, fun game that is easy to play even if you aren’t a golf fan. With QuickShot, World Tour and QuickShot Pro games to choose from, flick the ball to hit it (the harder you hit the further it will go) and when it’s in the air swipe the ball to control the direction. Play is on real golf courses, which look great thanks to excellent graphics, and smooth motion. The iOS version supports Game Center too.

 

Let’s Golf 2

iOS

A bit of a classic now. Choose from eight 3D characters – each with their own special skill – and play across six fantasy courses. Controls are simple enough: hold the control button to gain power then press to hit the ball at will. Gameloft recently optimised the game for the iPhone 4’s Retina display and graphically it’s really impressive with very smooth motion. It’s not as addictive as Flick Golf though and the cartoon element can be a little irritating, making it more suitable for kids.

The Open Championship 2011

iOS and Android 

Developed by the R&A (Royal and Albert) specifically for the St Georges Open Championship, the free iPhone and Android app is beautifully designed, with a general news feed, along with a bulletin providing up-to-the minute information on play. Multimedia content is excellent: the Live Cast provides video action from holes 14, 15 and 16 with audio commentary you can listen too independently. There’s an overall view of the course, along with graphics and video for each hole.

PGA Tour

iOS and Android

The free official app of the PGA Tour is worth looking for anyone following the Open Championship or Viking Classic. For the Open it offers real-time scoring, a list of the current standings, alongside Tee Times and play-by-play updates. There’s a useful database of player information and hole-by-hole course images. The app also has some exclusive highlights, with recaps, including PGA Tour Today and Shot of the Day. There’s a lot of information there, but it’s not as user-friendly as The Open Championship app.

 

 

Golf Digest Tips Plus

Looking to improve your swing? This app includes a collection of 120 golf tips and lessons, all written by professionals, including Jim Flick (who is placed in the World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame) and David Leadbetter (Nick Faldo’s coach during his most prolific period). Golf fans will appreciate the range of tips available, which can be overwhelming, although Lesson Builder is useful for selecting exactly the type of shot and teacher. The navigation can be a bit confusing at times and the app certainly lacks sheen and polish and could do with more video content, but golf fans will find something useful and it’s free.


Rules of Golf

The R&A’s official rules app provides an exhaustive guide not just about the game of golf, but for conduct before, during and after golf games. This includes positioning the ball, playing and even the correct way to move the ball and there’s also an interesting section on Etiquette. The sheer depth of information and rules means that it’s only really of interest to serious golfers.

 

Everyday Golf Coach

iOS

Professional golfer Noel Rousseaur has put together this collection of 32 golf videos, illustrating the correct technique for a selection of golf moves. The iPad version includes a swing analysis suite in what is a comprehensive and user-friendly app for golf fans.

 

GolfLogix: Golf GPS

iOS, Android


This incredibly useful app gives you free GPS distances from a range of golf courses around the world. Once registered it you can search via location or country. Click on the required golf course then you select a hole and the information you want to track, such as chips, sand shots and putts. It then downloads the data along with imagery so you can view GPS distance, via an active data connnection. Regular golfers will find it incredibly useful and upgrading to be a Champion Member ($19.50) lets you target GPS distances.
