Best new mobile phone games: Releases from E3 and beyond

E3 wasn’t just about the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U and the Sony PlayStation Vita. This year there was a wide selection of mobile phone games.  The majority of the games are still for iOS, with some previously released games making their debut on iPad. But Android wasn’t forgotten about, with gaming developers announcing titles for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, which seems to be the poster-boy for Android gaming. And we can’t forget about games especially designed for the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip for mobile and tablet.

Street Fighter IV Volt Battle Protocal
Capcom’s latest version of Street Fighter for iPhone and iPad, now includes WiFi support, so you can play multiplayer anywhere in the world, without being constrained by Bluetooth. Gameplay is classic Street Figther, with 2D graphics and a virtual four-way controller. Check out the video below…

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing
First launched on the iPhone in February, the latest version has been optimised especially for iPad, where more screen real estate appears to dramatically improve the user experience. Race as one of 10 classic Sega characters, over multiple tracks or play with friend over WiFi and Bluetooth.

DrawRace 2
If you haven’t played the original DrawRace before, it’s totally unlike any racing game. Use your finger to trace a route around the track: draw faster and the car goes faster, slower and the brakes are applied. Version 2 includes 16 different cars, and 32 race tracks, including 3D race tracks.

FIFA 12
Football games on your mobile aren’t anything new, but EA’s IOS version of FIFA 12 lets you view the pitch on your iPad, but use the iPhone 4 or iPod Touch as a controller. In theory this means multiple users can play at once using the iPad as a TV screen – could this be the start of the iPad as the portable console?

Transformers Dark of the Moon
Destined to be one of the Big Summer Blockbusters, here you play as Optimus Prime or Bumblebee as you tackle the Decepticons. Not all movie tie-ins have been successful (think Iron Man), but at least the graphics impress.

Shadowgun
From creators of the excellent Samurai Vengeance II, comes a third-person action shooter designed for tablets and smartphones supporting the Nvidia Tegra 2 Chip. Play as professional bounty hunter John Slade what looks like an immersive game with outstanding graphics.

Let’s Golf 3
The latest instalment of Gameloft’s golf series is firmly in the fun camp compared to other more serious golf games out there, but we’d happily waste time practicing our putts. (The 11 year-old prequel has already arrived on the Xperia Play.)
