The Nokia Lumia 920 is one of our favourite smartphones, running Windows Phone 8, it’s well designed, comes in a selection of fantastic colours, includes a great screen and fantastic PureView camera. We liked it so much we ranked it number two in our Best Smartphones of 2012.
We’ve already selected our favourite Nokia Lumia Tips and Tricks with some useful time-saving shortcuts and here are our favourite apps.
Toggle
Windows Phone 8 introduced resizable tiles to the distinctive Windows Phone UI. Toggle lets you pin shortcuts from the Settings menu – such as WiFi, Airplane Mode, Location Services, Bluetooth and Data – to the Lumia 920’s homescreen. A simple, but essential app.
Skype
Whether video chatting with friends and family using the 1.3-megapixel camera or IM-ing work colleagues, Skype is an essential download. Launch the app and you’ll instantly recent conversations, swipe right to view favourites and for address book and tap the corner to view your profile.
Old IM favourite MSN Messenger is being shut down and users migrated to Skype, but this beautifully designed interface should make the transition smooth for Windows Phone 8 users.
Metrotube
Unbelievably there’s no official YouTube app in the Windows Marketplace – just a link to the mobile website. Metrotube is a fantastic substitute though – the intuitive UI makes it easy to find videos, leave comments and share favourites. Log-in with your Google account to manage playlists and you can even download videos to watch offline. MetroTube isn’t free, but 79p is a fair price to pay, especially as Google has confirmed it has no plans to create a dedicated WP8 YouTube app.
Flixster
For cinema fans Flixster is the movie app to download. Check out the latest box office, new cinema and DVD releases and watch over 15,000 trailers. Pin in your local cinema to the homescreen to quickly view showtimes and contact information and make sure you don’t visit the cinema without checking out critics and user reviews collated from Rotten Tomatoes. Slick and intuitive the Windows Phone 8 is essential to anyone who visits the cinema regularly – and we think it’s far nicer to use than iOS or Android versions.
Gun Bros
At the moment despite Xbox integration, for gamers the Windows Phone Marketplace lags behind the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. 3D shoot-em up Gun Bros is an exception. Use the virtual joy pads to move and shoot, as the brothers battle the evil T.O.O.L organisation and connect to Xbox Live to invite friends ‘brothers’ to fight. 3D graphics looks amazing on the Lumia 920’s 4.5-inch screen and best of all it’s totally free.
