Starting at the budget end of the spectrum, EE’s own-brand Harrier Mini still holds up as a low-cost 4G phone for £29.99 upfront and only £10 top-up required. The LG K8 was nominated for best value smartphone as part of this year’s Recombu Awards and you can pick it up from EE along with a pair of Beats EP headphones, all for £129.99, whilst at the top-end of the carrier’s PAYG lineup is the Samsung Galaxy A3, again twinned with a pair of Beats EP on-ear headphones, although this time you’ve got to pay £259.99 upfront.

O2 stocks the full range of premium handsets from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Sony Xperia XZ to the Huawei P9 Plus, so if you’ve got a Scrooge McDuck-style money vault in your homestead, you’re sorted. If money’s a bit tighter, there’s a decent selection of mid-rangers including the incredibly stylish Sony Xperia XA and Samsung’s underrated Galaxy A3. Vodafone is the best place to head if you’ve got around £100 or less to spend on a PAYG phone. Voda’s own-brand Smart Prime 7 is one of the very best value blowers we’ve played with in 2016, offering a sharp display, great battery life and surprisingly good cameras for such a low price.

On top of that, you have a decent host of mid-range mobiles and more pricey handsets to choose from, including the Voda’s own Smart Platinum 7 or the sexy curved-screen-laden Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge at the very top end.

Three has the full range of PAYG phones so you can find something great no matter what your budget, although other networks are a little stronger around the £100 mark.
