Tough Phones: The Best Rugged and Waterproof Mobile Phones

Our pick of the best waterproof, drop-resistant and super-tough mobiles that you can buy in 2015, for camping and outdoor expeditions.

if you’re more inclined to hike up a mountain at the weekend than sit around watching Don’t Tell The Bride repeats, you’ll want to invest in a durable, rugged mobile phone that can survive a few drops or the odd plunge into a lake. Here’s our pick of the best new drop-proof and water resistant phones in 2015.

Waterproof phone: Sony Xperia Z5 or Xperia M4 Aqua

Tough Phones - The Sony Xperia Z5

If you’re after a phone that can survive a swim in fresh water (or simply being dropped into the toilet on a drunken night out), the Xperia Z5 is a solid pick. This phone can survive for up to 30 minutes in around a metre of water without taking damage, plenty of time to take some underwater snaps. It’s not cheap, but it packs a brilliant camera, gorgeous Full HD screen and an accurate fingerprint sensor for improved security, so there’s no compromise on specs and features.

If money’s a bit tight for the Z5, try Sony’s Xperia M4 Aqua instead. It’s also water resistant but knocks back the specs to slash the cost.

Drop-resistant phone: Motorola Moto X Force

Motorola’s Moto X Force is the phone equivalent of The Terminator: give it a good twatting and it’ll just get back up again, not a scratch. This 5.4-inch slab of hardiness is a feature-packed premium beauty too, packing a gorgeous Quad HD screen, incredible battery life and a very good 21-megapixel camera.

Drop-resistant and waterproof phone: Samsung Galaxy S5 Active

We haven’t seen an Active version of the Galaxy S6 yet, but the Galaxy S5 Active is still a solid tough phone that is IP67 dust and water resistant and can survive a few short tumbles without issue. The 5.1-inch screen boasts Full HD visuals and you get a decent 16-megapixel camera for capturing stunning vistas and action shots.

Super-tough phone: Cat B15Q

Tough Phones - Cat B15Q

If you’re working on a building site or somewhere that demands the ultimate in rugged smartphones, this Cat handset will do the job. It’s IP67 dust and water resistant and also rugged enough to survive being thrown around thanks to a tough aluminium body and scratch-resistant screen. You have full access to the Google Play store to download apps, while the 4-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera do the job.
